Introduction
In order to fulfil the audit and reporting requirements of the U.S. Federal Reserve, designated cash centres must be able to respond, on demand, to currency stock and distribution enquiries. They must be able to provide the Federal Reserve with the destination bank and date of issue for any quoted banknote serial number or packet.
DTS is designed for use by an ECI – an Extended Custodial Inventory. An ECI is a cash centre for the stockholding and distribution of US currency authorised by the US Federal Reserve. The institution acts as a collection point and distribution centre for US currency in the country or region.

Overview
DTS maintains records of shipment, container and content information. The system uses a number of portable hand-held bar-code scanners, connecting with networked Windows™ PCs, to capture pack and shipment information into the reporting database.
The process is very simple. The hand held scanners are used to scan the bar-codes on banknote packs when shipments are made up for despatch. The pack bar-code defines serial number range and other bar-codes are scanned to record the currency denomination and pack type. These codes are stored in the hand-held device, together with a destination code for the shipment. When the daily shipments are complete, the scanner is taken to a PC and the data file is uploaded. Individual transaction files are then aggregated into a database on the network server. Authorised users can then query the database or produce reports at any time to meet requests of the Federal Reserve.
The principles of DTS can easily be extended to cover the tracking of all currencies issued by a wholesale currency distributor, or for new banknote issue recording by Central Banks.
